AmeriNZ 265 – Progress report

I begin today by talking about all sorts of things I’ve been up to in the time between podcast episodes. Then I talk about some stuff in the NZ news, mostly revolving around the election, before moving on to comments.

Otherwise engaged

This weekend is the third annual Pride 48 extravaganza of GLBT and GLBT-friendly podcasts. The first two years, we did a 48-hour marathon of live shows streaming out over pride48.com. This year, we have around 20 shows sharing broadcast facilities and a live studio audience at the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

However, there are several of us who were not able to be there, so I’m coordinating about a dozen shows broadcasting like last year, from their respective studios. My own show will be at 5pm on Sunday, September 18 (Eastern time zone in the Americas, which is 9am Monday, September 19 here in New Zealand).

Overnight (Eastern time) this year we’re re-broadcasting the live shows from earlier in the day instead of trying to find folks willing to broadcast in the middle of the night.

So far, the event has gone well, apart from one non-Vegas show that didn’t happen for some reason. That meant I had to take over the broadcasting duties until the show due to follow was able to start, which happened about 15 minutes early.

It’s a pretty big deal for me, and that’s what I’m up to this weekend.

AmeriNZ 235 – Live on Pride 48 Again

Today’s show starts a regular series of live shows on Pride 48. I’ll be alternating weeks, roughly, with Honey of My Honey Wears Plaid.

I’m out of practice with these live shows, and thought I’d try some new settings. Well, that didn’t work too well, and the sound on the first 8 minutes is pretty awful, until I re-set my settings and the sound is less awful. It took me awhile to sort out the sound problems. This will get better over time.

Anyway (that’s for HatM), we started out talking about disaster preparations and then just followed the conversation wherever it lead. Joining us later was John Ong, who is one of the first gay podcasters back when podcasting began. We were also joined for awhile by Satyr69. After we finished, we continued on talking with John Ong who did a special show about podcasting.

I’ll be back for another AmeriNZ LIVE podcast on Pride 48 this Thursday, September 23 at 7:30pm EDT (Americas, 11:30am Friday, September 24 in NZ). Honey from My Honey Wears Plaid will be back on September 30.

AmeriNZ 233 – Distance subdued

The earthquake in Christchurch was a very big deal, but it was kinda weird how I heard about it. Social networks really helped. In some ways, it was all the flipside of an episode I did two years ago.

After that, I have some general life updates, along with a plethora of phone comments—listeners answered the call! My live shows may be close to returning.

Clearing some dust

I’ve now restored the links to all AmeriNZ Podcast episodes for 2010 (and December 2009, too). I’ve also restored the links to all four videos, three of which can be viewed here on the site (for some reason, video 4 won’t play, and I have no idea why—I’m stumped). I also fixed my video player skin, which had an image I made—up until it disappeared.

It turns out all these problems—and more I discovered just this evening—were all caused by upgrades to podPress. I know they call it a “labour of love”, but I’d sure love them a lot more if they didn’t break things when they fixed other things.

Anyway, I’ll keep restoring links. The next update will be when I’ve completed re-linking the podcast episodes from 2009. Please let me know if you discover any broken links to my files (I can’t control external links) fro anything posted in December 2009 or later. Thanks!

Pardon the dust…

Over the weekend I upgraded WordPress on this site and there was a small but critical change I didn’t know about: It changed the way it handled file path names, and that meant that all my audio and video files were no longer available.

As of this posting, I’ve restored access to all files going back to the Pride 48 live episode posted the end of June, so all episodes from then on (July and August) are again available. I’ll get the rest sorted out, too, but it’ll take time because I have to fix it one episode at a time.

What happened is that before the upgrade there was a drop-down menu for my audio files so I could simply select them. After the upgrade, that drop-down menu was gone and WordPress couldn’t find the files anymore.

So, I have to go in and add the complete web address for each file—easy enough to do, but it takes time. Actually, it’s not that easy: For older episodes I’ll have to check on the server to find out what the filename actually is, and that’ll take a little while longer.

2Political didn’t have this problem when I upgraded it because it never had the drop-down menu: I always had to enter the location of the files.

Oh, and one other thing: I realised I REALLY need to make a custom “404” page—the standard one is ugly.

AmeriNZ 155 – Today is tomorrow

amerinz_podcast_150x150It’s been nearly two weeks since my last solo podcast, so I thought today I’d update some things. I start by telling you what we did for Mothers’ Day (Fathers’ Day in NZ/Aus is the First Sunday in September). As winter begins, I tell you about news items: First, Auckland was ranked the fourth most liveable city in the world (Kiwis don’t care about that, really). Another survey found New Zealand was the 8th happiest country in the world out of ten. New statistics are out about marriages and civil unions. Who would the New Zealand Prime Minister “turn gay” for?

May is New Zealand Music Month, and if I can locate enough podsafe artists I may put together an episode sometime before the end of the month. At the end of June, I’ll be joining other GLBT podcasters in Pride48 in which we’ll all be doing live-streaming shows over Pride Weekend, starting at 7pm US Eastern Time on June 26. I don’t know what time I’ll be doing the live show, but I’ll let you know. There will also be a live chatroom so you can chat with me and other listeners.
