AmeriNZ 210 – US Immigration Equality

amerinz_podcast_150x150The United States’ anti-gay immigration policy is “gratuitous cruelty,” according to US Representative Jerold Nadler, the chief sponsor of the Uniting American Families Act in the US House of Representatives. What’s happening to make US immigration law treat GLBT Americans fairly and equally, as many other countries—such as New Zealand—already do?

Joining me today to discuss that is Julie Kruse of Immigration Equality, an organisation dedicated to changing the law and helping bi-national couples.

Julie talks about the current state of the effort to change the law, as well as related issues. For example, how do issues like the Defense of Marriage Act affect immigration reform? How does the effort to make US immigration law treat GLBT people equally relate to comprehensive immigration reform? Ultimately, what’s the prospect for reforming US immigration law?

For me, this was an interesting and informative talk about an issue that affects me personally. Unfortunately, I made an error in the audio settings and the sound isn’t as good as it could’ve been. This is an interview I really enjoyed doing.

AmeriNZ 202 – From the headlines

amerinz_podcast_150x150Recorded live and presented mostly unedited (be warned): Joining me for today’s Live Chat on Pride48.com were Archerr, Daniel Brewer, Larken and Wes Stone.

In this episode, we talk about some stuff in the news, starting with the Mississippi high school that cancelled its prom rather than allow a lesbian to attend with her female date. We also talk about a crazy poll, the California State Senator who was outed when he was arrested with another man, some “tenther” laws and other serious stuff. But we also talk about some internet and tech stuff—the Apple iPad, the Pride 48 podcasting marathon, Twitter as a customer service tool (really!), and a New Zealander caught up in the a craze. All kinds of stuff this week.

Archerr frequently does group shows like this (and he’ll be doing a group show next week) and you know what? It’s much easier than what I was trying to do. To me, it seemed like it flowed more smoothly and was more fast-paced. What do you think?

The next live AmeriNZ podcast on Pride48.com will be starting at 8:00pm Eastern North American time on Thursday, March 25 (1:00pm Friday, March 26 New Zealand time—new time due to change in US clocks). Join us! You can also join other listeners in the chatroom, where you can ask questions or make comments as the show is streamed.

AmeriNZ 199 – Turning point

Recorded live and presented mostly unedited (be warned): Joining me for today’s Live Chat on Pride48.com were Daniel Brewer, LurryDean and Larken.

In this episode, we start out talking about the announced the topic, about the violent rhetoric of rightwing christianists. We look at whether this is a turning point, where the right wing finally starts to be defeated, or is this merely the start of something far, far worse?

The end of this podcast was something to which I could not get (that’ll make sense if you get that far).

Join us on for the next live podcast on Pride48.com for a lively, wide-ranging discussion of this and possibly other topics. The live chat starts at 8:30pm (NEW start time!) Eastern North American time on Thursday, March 11 (2:30pm Friday, March 12 New Zealand time). You can also join other listeners in the chatroom, where you can ask questions or make comments as the show is streamed.

AmeriNZ 197 – Does it matter?

amerinz_podcast_150x150Recorded live and presented mostly unedited (be warned): Joining me for today’s Live Chat on Pride48.com were Steven, Brother Cinaedus and Larken. There are sound issues, I know, and I’ll work to fix them.

In a recent commentary at Adovacte.com, Chandler Burr suggested the way to win GLBT rights is to point out that being gay is an inborn characteristic, not—as our religious opponents put it—a “lifestyle choice” (as if they evaluated the options and “chose” to be heterosexual). When people believe being gay is not a “choice”, they support us overwhelmingy.

Yet many GLBT people hate describing sexuality as an inborn characteristic. The argue that sexuality, and even gender, is fluid and in any case, saying “we’re born this way” means we’re claiming to be helpless victims. Our rights ought to be ours regardless of how or why we’re GLB or T. Some even reject “labels”, like, for example, gay singers who say they’re “singers who happen to be gay”.

Does it matter if we’re “born or made”? Is rejecting use of the word “gay” a form of internalised homophobia? And if we’re all just humans who vary, how do we take on our religious opponents who think we’ve “chosen” our sexuality?

Join us on for the next live podcast on Pride48.com for a lively, wide-ranging discussion. The next live chat starts at 8:30pm (NEW start time!) Eastern North American time on Thursday, February 25 (2:30pm Friday, February 26 New Zealand time). You can also join other listeners in the chatroom, where you can ask questions or make comments as the show is streamed.

AmeriNZ 196 – What’s the topic?

amerinz_podcast_150x150Recorded live and presented unedited (be warned): Joining me for today’s Live Chat on Pride48.com were Archerr, Daniel Brewer and Brother Cinaedus.

This was the resumption of the live AmeriNZ Podcasts, and was meant to have a topic—The State of the Gays. We did discuss it a little, and other political stuff, but it was a free-for-all discussion of all sorts of stuff. We’re kind of out of practice for these podcasts, so I don’t really mind.

After the closing theme music, is a bonus: The pre-show (all seven minutes of it).

Join us on for the next live podcast on Pride48.com for a lively, wide-ranging discussion. The next live chat starts at 8:30pm (NEW start time!) Eastern North American time on Thursday, February 18 (2:30pm Friday, February 19 New Zealand time). You can also join other listeners in the chatroom, where you can ask questions or make comments as the show is streamed.
