AmeriNZ 189 – Year’s End Live Chat

amerinz_podcast_150x150Okay, so this is longer than usual. In fact, it’s longer than I intended— a lot longer—but it’s the last live chat group show for the year. And about halfway through or so a special guest (Nigel!) joins us.

There was no particular topic for this show, and we talked about a lot of different things—some serious, some not. It was just a bunch of people having a conversation. The group this week included Steven in Wisconsin, Larken and Brother Cinaedus (unfortunately, Skype dropped him about halfway through).

  1. Great show, guys!!! The issue you discussed where you are seeing tweets from people you don’t follow is the new re-tweet feature that everyone is bitching about. If someone re-tweets a tweet from someone they follow, the twitter badge of the original person shows up on the tweet instead of the person who retweeted it. It’s very annoying and I wish they admit that people don’t like it and turn it off.

  2. i can’t believe this is the last show for the year! huh?
i know New Ziland is ahead of the rest of the world, but it aint THAT far ahead.

    oh well.
i might have to subscribe to 2political now. To fill in my last month at Dept of Salt.

  3. I have Time Warner for my long distance and for local calls. It is a flat rate in US, Canada, Puerto Rico. What the wife doesn’t like is that when someone calls while you’re on the phone, the volume briefly cuts down; doesn’t really bother me. What DOES bother me is that when the electrical power goes out, so does the phone. Then I use the cell.

But I seriously don’t think the phone companies will charge from one area code to another within a calling area. For one thing, in those places with an area code overlay (e.g., 212 is Manhattan, and now 646 is also Manhattan) one could easily have people in the same apartment building in different area codes.

FYI – Albany (NY) International Airport. Flies direct to Toronto, for sure. My wife once had to fly from Albany to Toronto (that’s west of Albany) to get to Vienna and Kiev (that’s east of Albany).

What Tim said about Twitter. Doesn’t bother me, but I’m an off-and-on Twitter user.

  4. Hi guys and hello from Australia.

Just a few things on what you were discussing regarding Marriage in Australia and Federal vs State laws.

Same sex marriage is something that is just being passed between the two.

Most states have their own laws in regard to this but this could be overridden if the federal government wanted. At the last Federal election the PM Kevin Rudd said that he would leave it up to the individual states to enact laws bringing in Civil Partnerships but they cannot bring in gay marriage because the federal goverment a few years ago defined marriage as being only between a man and a woman.

So far no state has the had the guts to bring in Civil Partnerships because of the very vocal religous right.

The closest we have so far is in the ACT but this is not a state meaning the Attorney General (Under the control of the PM) has final say on any changes to the law. So while our PM is happy for the states to make up their own minds on the issue he has made his stance clear by binning any changes made in the ACT.

If you want to keep up to date on Gay politics in Australia I would join the Sydney Star Observer (SSO) group on Facebook. Complete copies of this weekly community paper can be down loaded weekly
