AmeriNZ 270 – Not in service

This is my last chance to post a podcast episode before the New Zealand elections. Because there have been several episodes in which I’ve talked about the election, I’ll turn on full comment moderation at or before midnight on Friday until the polls close at 7pm on Saturday, this to comply with New Zealand election law. You can still leave comments, but I won’t post them until after the polls close.

The title for today’s episode refers to the trouble I recently had with my podcast, as well as my recent jury service.

Next week I’ll finish talking about the election when I go over the results and what happens next. Soon, I’m going to revist old episodes I did on moving to New Zealand. Curious about any aspect of moving to New Zealand? Let me know!

AmeriNZ 269 – A fighting chance

I was determined to post a second episode last week, but the fates did not allow. This episode was recorded on Thursday, November 10, 2011. I mostly mention a bit more about the upcoming NZ election, and also go over some feedback, which lets me talk about other topics. I borrowed a podcaster’s bumper music for this episode—and yet, it hasn’t been played on a single podcast. Ah, a cryptic riddle! While I won’t use the bumper again, I will explain the riddle next episode.

I recorded this last Thursday afternoon, then attempted to post it later that evening. However, FileZilla, my FTP software, suddenly couldn’t connect to this site (I have no idea why), so I tried to upload manually through the web, which I finally figured out how to do Friday morning (it’s been years since I’ve done that…). That also didn’t work. After some unhelpful customer non-service from my host, Nigel suggested different FTP software, Cybeduck, and that, finally worked. I still have no idea why FileZilla suddenly stopped working, or why I couldn’t upload through the webhost’s own website.

All of which just goes to show that I’m probably the single most dedicated podcaster who doesn’t podcast very regularly.

AmeriNZ 268 – A Monday Episode

I didn’t have a chance to podcast last week, so I thought I’d record on a Monday for a change. I talk a little bit about news stuff, mainly the two recent non-holidays, one of which is introduced with a voicemail. Then, another phone comment introduces the next topic: The New Zealand election. Finally, another phone comment introduces the final topic: Who is New Zealand to get to do the haka before international rugby matches? A final written comment rounds out this episode.

AmeriNZ 267 – Champions

Today I begin by talking about the fact that New Zealand won the Rugby World Cup. As I would. It’s important to New Zealand, and I tell you why. I also talk about some of my impressions about the event. After that, I talk about the beginning of the New Zealand election campaign. New Zealand has gas problems. A sneaky life update follows. What’s up with Halloween?

AmeriNZ 266 – Dilemma resolved

I begin today with updates about me—a very important subject, indeed. Then it’s on to New Zealand news before I head to my main topic, how am I going to vote? It’s been a difficult path, but I HAVE decided. Oddly, there’s a connection to US politics. I explain that in some detail. I also have comments to comment on, and that’s certainly varied.

AmeriNZ 265 – Progress report

I begin today by talking about all sorts of things I’ve been up to in the time between podcast episodes. Then I talk about some stuff in the NZ news, mostly revolving around the election, before moving on to comments.

AmeriNZ 264 – LIVE on Pride 48 for 2011

Earlier today I broadcast a live version of this podcast on Pride 48 as part of the 2011 live podcasting extravaganza. I was joined by a special guest—you’ll have to listen to find out who, but let’s just say it’s someone who was an inspiration for me becoming a podcaster. This podcast is unedited, including some Skype-related sound dropouts.

We talked about what the guest has been up to, then we even connected to Las Vegas so members of the live audience could ask questions. We also talked a bit about podcasting.

This was a very fun show for me—and apparently some others, too, and fun is what Pride 48 is all about.

On November 7, we’ll be doing another “State of the Station” to start planning next year’s Pride 48 Live Podcasting Extravaganza. Join us!

I’ll be joining Nigel for The Third Colony on farpointradio.com Saturday, September 24 at 9pm EDT (Americas; 1pm Sunday, September 25 NZ).

Otherwise engaged

This weekend is the third annual Pride 48 extravaganza of GLBT and GLBT-friendly podcasts. The first two years, we did a 48-hour marathon of live shows streaming out over pride48.com. This year, we have around 20 shows sharing broadcast facilities and a live studio audience at the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

However, there are several of us who were not able to be there, so I’m coordinating about a dozen shows broadcasting like last year, from their respective studios. My own show will be at 5pm on Sunday, September 18 (Eastern time zone in the Americas, which is 9am Monday, September 19 here in New Zealand).

Overnight (Eastern time) this year we’re re-broadcasting the live shows from earlier in the day instead of trying to find folks willing to broadcast in the middle of the night.

So far, the event has gone well, apart from one non-Vegas show that didn’t happen for some reason. That meant I had to take over the broadcasting duties until the show due to follow was able to start, which happened about 15 minutes early.

It’s a pretty big deal for me, and that’s what I’m up to this weekend.

The artwork accompanying this post was created to celebrate the Pride 48 weekend by Lauren. This is a cross-post, with the same post also on my AmeriNZ Blog.

AmeriNZ 263 – Outside looking in

A mixed bag today! After a quick talk about New Zealand news, it’s on to my first topic: A response to Auntie Vera Charles, something expats should keep in mind. I also talk about why I’m so centred on politics—yes, there IS a reason. Listeners provide more examples for the Great Preposition Debate.

Join us this weekend for the Pride 48 Live Podcasting Extravaganza!

AmeriNZ 262 – NZ politics (sort of) special

Today’s is sort of a special episode, with about two-thirds being the valedictory speech of Chris Carter, New Zealand’s first openly gay Member of Parliament and, later, Cabinet Minister. His speech is included in its entirety (about 22 minutes). I think it’s important to document history, but it’s also something that a lot of people would never hear.

Before that, I talk about three things in the NZ news: Earthquake and Pike River updates and, in brighter news, the Rugby World Cup begins on Friday. People are getting festive over that.

Next time, I’ll have comments and voicemails and such.

I’ll be joining Nigel for his The Third Colony show on Saturday, September 10 at 9pm EDT (Americas; 1pm Sunday, September 11 in NZ).
