AmeriNZ 232 – Surprises

I have a little housekeeping first: An upgrade to my site caused some havoc, killing off links to my podcast files, and that came as a surprise. I’ll fix it, but it’ll take time. Then, it’s on to a couple items in the news, starting with the cost of Kiwi expats. My mini topic today is a talk about some small things that surprised me when I moved to New Zealand. Comments round out the episode, which lets me comment further.

At the end, I play a special promo I made for Nigel’s The Third Colony show this weekend.

Be sure to listen to Nigel LIVE on The Third Colony Saturday, 9-11pm Eastern (in the Americas, 1pm Sunday in New Zealand) on qnation.fm. Go to The Third Colony website for how to listen, or to join the chatroom.

Pardon the dust…

Over the weekend I upgraded WordPress on this site and there was a small but critical change I didn’t know about: It changed the way it handled file path names, and that meant that all my audio and video files were no longer available.

As of this posting, I’ve restored access to all files going back to the Pride 48 live episode posted the end of June, so all episodes from then on (July and August) are again available. I’ll get the rest sorted out, too, but it’ll take time because I have to fix it one episode at a time.

What happened is that before the upgrade there was a drop-down menu for my audio files so I could simply select them. After the upgrade, that drop-down menu was gone and WordPress couldn’t find the files anymore.

So, I have to go in and add the complete web address for each file—easy enough to do, but it takes time. Actually, it’s not that easy: For older episodes I’ll have to check on the server to find out what the filename actually is, and that’ll take a little while longer.

2Political didn’t have this problem when I upgraded it because it never had the drop-down menu: I always had to enter the location of the files.

Oh, and one other thing: I realised I REALLY need to make a custom “404” page—the standard one is ugly.

AmeriNZ 231 – Thanks and No Thanks

amerinz_podcast_150x150My first topic today is a blog post of an expat American who’s leaving New Zealand. I see it as a cautionary tale, so I go over my 3 “rules” for being an expat. In other words, I give you my advice about being an expat—including a couple things I shouldn’t have done. Some election news is in the middle. Then, an email provides me a topic: Expats voting in their home country. Should they? Which elections? Comments on the site round out the episode, as usual.

Thanks to everyone who offered support and encouragement! I’m absolutely not quitting—but new things are coming!

AmeriNZ 230 – Crazed Man Posits

amerinz_podcast_150x150Today’s title is derived from a little Internet fad, which I talk about first. Then, they’ll let any riffraff live in New Zealand. An almost American-style change to the NZ income tax has been proposed. American-style climate change deniers are grandstanding. The liquor laws may yet change. The local elections are coming up fast, and important deadlines fall on Friday of this week. Then after comments I share a little before ending this episode.

AmeriNZ 229 – LIVE Politics and more

amerinz_podcast_150x150This episode is presented as streamed out over the Internet—in other words, not edited. For this very special LIVE episode of AmeriNZ, I’m joined by Daniel and TurnipHed. We take advantage of the opportunity to give an update on the Pride 48 DVD. Daniel is anal about audio—like we didn’t know.

We start by talking about the Proposition 8 ruling. Then we talk about marriage equality v. civil unions. We talk a lot about marriage—what it is and can be. Yeah, Glenn Beck is mentioned. Healthcare creeps into the discussion, and then lots of other stuff about American politics, and Daniel makes lots of good points, TurnipHed makes good points about Canada and Arthur mentions New Zealand: Yeah, you’ll have to listen to get the details.

Thanks to Honey of My Honey Wears Plaid for letting me borrow his time slot (I tried to put the furniture back and vacuum afterwards—sorry about the water stains on the tables).

AmeriNZ 228 – Busy in New Zealand

amerinz_podcast_150x150I begin today with a story about produce. Well, it’s an international dispute, really. Then it’s on to the story of the fall from grace of New Zealand’s first openly-gay Member of Parliament. A jet even gets a mention today. Phone messages and comments round out this episode.

Join me on Pride48.com for a LIVE AmeriNZ Podcast on Thursday at 7:30pm Eastern (in the Americas, 11:30am Friday in New Zealand).
