AmeriNZ 104 – Góða Ólavsøku

Today’s snack-sized episode begins with the final national anthem, that of the Faroe Islands because today is Ólavsøka. While I don’t speak Faroese, I see some similarity with other languages. So: How many other podcasters do YOU know who’ve mentioned Grimm’s Law? By the way, the title of this episode is in correct on my site, but the server doesn’t allow anything but basic characters in the MP3 filename. How rude!

The rest of this episode I update a few things, like a weather bomb that hit New Zealand this past weekend. Weather was bad, but we still did a few things. Comments let me expand on some of the things I said before, and add some new things.

Be back on Friday with another political podcast with Jason. There’ll be a special announcement, too.

AmeriNZ 103 – Different ways

I have a cold, but I tried to edit this so it makes more sense. Sometimes I succeeded.

I begin with a brief history update, then I tell you about an evening Nigel and I had recently. For the main topic today, I tell you about life in a place with a political and economic system that’s different from my homeland’s. New Zealand has a parliamentary democracy and it’s a social democracy. I know that some of my fellow Americans would hate the idea of either, but other country’s ways aren’t necessarily worse or wrong. There are some aspects to New Zealand that even the rightest-of-right Americans would approve of.

My next political discussion with Jason will be posted on Friday, August 1 (NZ time). If you have any questions or topics you’d like us to discuss, please send them to Arthur(at]amerinzpodcast.com in the next few days.

AmeriNZ 102 – Becoming Kiwi

I begin today by telling you about a couple items in the news, first, those missing Indians, then the NZ Census wants to identify the sexual orientation of New Zealanders.

The main topic today is about becoming Kiwi, essentially, being assimilated. I talk about my experience and my attitudes about it. I think that it helped me in unexpected ways.

Comments, a phone message and emails are next, which lets me talk a little more about the state of gay rights in New Zealand. Then I tell you about the schedule for Friday.

AmeriNZ 101 – Getting to stay

In today’s snack-sized episode, I tell you what it was like to go through the process of becoming a permanent resident, what it felt like and what I was thinking at the time. I also tell you a little bit about the pope in Australia and a NZ connection to it. Soon, maybe Friday, I’ll be talking about becoming a Kiwi.

AmeriNZ 100 – 100 Not Out

100 episodes! I commemorate the day by not commemorating it: Today is just a normal episode.

So today I tell you about Australia banning t-shirts that may annoy Catholics (it’s nothing new). This sort of thing doesn’t really happen in New Zealand. Petrol may get a whole lot more expensive. Big surprise, I know. I then provide some gout advice. Then it’s on to phone messages and written comments. I even talk a bit about trying vegetarianism for one day.

AmeriNZ 99 – Just Me

Today’s episode is just me: I tell you about something I got in the mail, something about the new home of my podcast (amerinzpodcast.com), then it’s on to the comments I haven’t had time for lately.

Today’s episode starts with another country’s national anthem; what country is it? This will be my feature for July. And speaking of July features, today I also continue a shorter episode on Tuesday.

AmeriNZ 98 – Presidential Sweepstakes

Jason joins me today as we resume our political discussions. The primaries are over, and the focus has shifted to the November elections. So today we kind of re-set the stage for what we’ll be talking about in future episodes.

We begin with a chat about campaign finance, then on to talk about vice presidential choices. Should the candidates have to condemn every single supporter who says something stupid? We talk about the recent Supreme Court gun ruling, and whether it will affect the election. Will the anti-gay ballot measures hurt Democrats this year, too?

Our next political chat will be in about three weeks, tentatively the last week of the month. In the meantime, please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.

AmeriNZ 97 – We’re Number One

July 1 is Canada Day, the country’s birthday, so first I salute my fellow Commonwealth Citizens.

Then, I tell you how New Zealand is number one in something unusual. The NZ political party that’s currently polling in first place was revealed to be using a shady PR agency. And I also tell you how the AmeriNZ Podcast was Number One.

AmeriNZ 96 – A few words

Today I try and use all seven of the words that George Carlin noted one cannot say on US television. It’s not as easy as you may think.

I go over a few items from New Zealand’s news. That lets me expand on a number of issues, including Australians’ obsession with sports people. Next, I talk a bit about the change in my podcast hosting. I then go over some emails (since the comments related to the change in podcast hosts).

AmeriNZ 95 – Changes abound

Episode 95 is now available, and it’s free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of this post, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page.

Today’s episode is all about changes, some major, some not.

I talk a bit today about the beginning of marriage equality in California and what that means. While it’s a very good day, the war is far form won.

But I begin this episode with an important announcement: It’s time to change the feed you subscribe to for this podcast. On June 19, I’ll be downgrading my Podomatic account to a free account and that could mean that access to my podcast through iTunes might be interrupted.

To avoid that, point your feedcatcher, including iTunes, to: http://feeds.feedburner.com/AmerinzPodcast

A phone message allows me to talk a bit about superstition in the US and New Zealand. Then, it’s on to other comments followed by another phone comment and written comments about episode 94: That episode was screwed up and it was because of, yep, Podomatic. Nevermind, that’ll be over soon.
