Guest Appearances

Okay, so my schedule has been crazy lately, and I haven’t had time to record. But if you’ve missed me and you just can’t wait until I post my next episode (yeah, right…), I’ve been on two other podcasts recently:

Ramble Redhead Episode 244: Turning the Microphone Around – Tim Corrimal and I turn the tables and interview Tom for his Third Anniversary Show. We tried to ask him some of the questions Tom asks his guests. I have to say, it was a lot of fun “Ramblizing” Tom.

I was also on Dubious Intent DNC Commentary Wrap-up Episode where the host, Daniel Brewer, Chef Mark and I talked about the Democratic Convention, the upcoming Republican Convention, and a whole bunch of things related—and not so related. Did you know I was the only guest on Daniel’s late lamented CallBox 7 podcast?

A new AmeriNZ Podcast is scheduled for tomorrow.

AmeriNZ 65 – Sweet and Sour

Episode 65 is now available, and it’s free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of this post, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page.

Today is a both sweet and sour. I’ve just finished celebrating my birthday, which was really good. But today was the state funeral for Sir Edmund Hillary, which was sad. Today, I talk about both.

First I talk about Sir Ed’s funeral, and explain a little bit about how much he meant to New Zealanders. He was an extraordinary man, and we’ll probably never again see anyone like him.

Then it’s on to a lighter topic—my birthday! What did Nigel get me, and what did I think about it? How did we celebrate? It’s different from how I celebrated in Illinois.

A few comments, another bald plea for reviews on iTunes, and that’s it for this Tuesday edition.

You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page.

I’m back! Did you miss me? I missed doing my podcast, to be honest, and I’m certainly glad to be back. Today I’m going to tell you a bit about my recent trip to the US, then after comments I have a brief personal update and all the usual contact details.

I’ve called today’s episode “Home from Home” because I’m back home from my home. I tell you about that trip and some of my impressions and observations, since this was my first trip back to the US in eight years.

All things considered, the trip went pretty well (though I talk a bit about some things that didn’t). I got done what I needed to, and I spent time with friends and family, which was great. I even met a real, live podcaster!

I tell you what it feels like now, with this 12-year-old hold on my life now gone. There’s a lot more about the trip, including more observations, on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where photos will be posted soon.

Leave a comment, or you can email me at amerinz(at}yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.

AmeriNZ 27 – Nigel Too

Episode 27 is now available. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of this post, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page.

Nigel’s back!

Nigel joins me again today. He’s recovering from a cold, one he seems to have shared with me. Please pardon the coughs (I tried to edit some out).

We take listener questions as our starting point, then I ask Nigel’s perspective on other listener questions I’ve already answered. Both provide loads of new information, including especially Nigel’s perspective on my early days in New Zealand.

We end with an email from a listener with a question about New Zealand in the news, then a listener comment from Japan. There’s even a (very) brief appearance from one of Nigel’s sisters.

AmeriNZ 20 – Cabbages and Kings

Episode 20 is now available. You can also listen to it through the player on the right hand side of my blog, or on my MySpace page.

Work is being done at the house today, so I can’t record a regular episode. Instead, I’m posting a chat I had with my friend Jason (his blog is here). We’ve been friends for many years. Is such a long-term friendship as rare as it seems to us? We also talk about moving beyond high school, which is related to us still being friends after all these years. Jason also talks a bit about his travels, especially his trip to New Zealand last year.

Leave a comment, or send an email to me at amerinz[at]yahoo.com. Feel free to comment at Jason’s blog, too.

The title for this post is by Lewis Carroll (from Through the Looking-Glass): “The time has come,” the Walrus said / “To talk of many things: / Of shoes–and ships–and sealing-wax– / Of cabbages–and kings– / And why the sea is boiling hot– / And whether pigs have wings.”

AmeriNZ 19 – A Special Guest

Episode 19 is now available. You can also listen to it through the player on the right hand side of my blog, or on my MySpace page.

Joining me today is my very special guest—my partner Nigel! Mike Hipp of podcastsoup.net wins the imaginary prize for guessing correctly.

We begin by talking about Nigel’s childhood in small-town New Zealand and what it was like. What was the first thing Nigel bought with his own money? And what was the first record he bought? He then explains some of how New Zealand has changed, sometimes radically, in his lifetime.

What’s it like for Nigel being Maori in modern New Zealand? Is there racism? What about friction between Maori and other Polynesians?

Nigel also shares his impressions of the US, a place he loves to visit. What were some of the things he noticed? What American thing would he like to have in New Zealand?

Then we talk about some silly stuff, including shout outs to Archerr, Tom the Ramble Redhead and Kalvin of Hello Waffles, whom Nigel doesn’t even know. Of course Nigel was just kidding about Nik in Paris’ comment on Episode 18.

Leave a comment, or send an email to me at amerinz[at]yahoo.com. You can send an email to Nigel there, too, and I’ll forward it. Probably.

Update: I’m also on the special Friday Group Chat on ArcherRadio, which you can get here.

AmeriNZ 12 – Moving On

Episode 12 is now available. You can also listen to it through the player on the right hand side of my blog, or on my MySpace page.

We’re doing much better, but today was difficult for me. Everything has been made better by the support we’ve had, including from all my new friends from my blog and podcast. Should we animal lovers be a little more upfront? Vicious dogs: They’re usually made so by their owners.

To get my podcast back on track, I talk a bit about Westminster-style parliamentary systems. In some ways, they’re much stronger than an American-style system. The exit of the UK’s Tony Blair is put into context of parliamentary systems, which opens up talk of New Zealand’s application of the system. Parliamentary systems like New Zealand has are more consultative, and so, do things that generally have more broad-based support.

Then, commentapalooza! A special appeal ends this episode—I hope you consider it.

Mentioned this episode:
Hello Waffles (one of my most favourites)
Ramble Redhead, episode 137 (another fave)
ArcherRadio 421 (my first “gang bang” episode)

AmeriNZ 11 – I’m still here

Episode 11 is now available. You can also listen to it through the player on the right hand side of my blog, or on my MySpace page.

This is a short episode, because I’m running out of bandwidth (resets around the 23rd), and also because I’m talking about the sudden death of our dog this past Friday. I explain how Saibh (rhymes with “five”) fit into our lives, and some of what she meant to us. In some ways we’ve been through this before, but this feels more intense. We’re trying to adjust.

The paraphrase I read from November 1998:

What is it about these small, furry animals that they become such an integral part of our lives that we feel their deaths as keenly as if they were human? Some people—including many at work, no doubt—would say it’s just because they’re obviously part of daily routines and rituals. If that’s all it was, we’d miss a toaster when it failed. Anyone who’s ever had a pet knows that they’re so much more than an animal sharing a living space and daily routine. They’re as much a part of us, “as if they were human”.

To avoid ending on a down note, there’s a competition for Kiwi shoe polish that will give away a trip for two to New Zealand. You can enter here.

At right is the album art that was supposed to accompany this podcast (I didn’t realise that podomatic overrides other settings).

AmeriNZ 7 – Secrets

AmeriNZ_Podcast_150x150.jpgEpisode 7 is now available. You can also listen to it through the player on the right hand side of my blog, or on my MySpace page.

There are some things that bloggers and podcasters don’t, or shouldn’t, reveal. Many don’t use their real names (I do), and many use a nickname (well, I do that, too). I won’t talk specifics about how I make money, but there are other things to say about it.

Neil Finn is a doofus. The American Ambassador says interesting things. Comments galore (I loves me my comments!). New Frappr Mappers! I’ve added a link on my blog to Amazon to make it easier for my American friends to buy books I mention or recommend. If you buy a book through the link on my site, I might even make a coin or two out of it.

Finally, a mashup—the first mashup I’ve made (I call it ArcherRadio vs. OMD). Yeah, I know that these things are usually done to a dance music beat, but hey, can you imagine anything but 80s music for Archerr?

Mentioned this week:

QCast Connecticut

Nik-in-Paris wedding episode

Podcastsoup.net

Also, if you haven’t done so yet, check out Kalvin at Hello Waffles. I kid around, but he really is one of my “most favourite” podcasters.

Next podcast is on Tuesday New Zealand time.

A podcast is up

AmeriNZ #1 – You gotta start some place

What was I thinking?

I posted my first podcast—or first episode of my podcast, as the case may be (we’ll see…). It was intended to be a test recording, which I made last week, but I decided to go ahead and post it anyway. That way, I couldn’t put off doing it any longer. It also had some stuff that I didn’t really want to re-record. So, there it is, in all its rough glory.

I’ve been thinking about doing a podcast since before I started this blog, but I decided to listen to several before giving it a go. All the podcasts listed at the right of my blog provided some inspiration, some directly. I’ll talk about that in another post.

In the meantime, this blog will remain largely as it has been, but it’ll also be the home for the show notes for podcasts and show comments. Feel free to leave a comment, ask a question, whatever. I hope to post new episodes every 7 to 10 days, and they’ll always be announced here.

So, on with the show:

On this episode I talk about the Prime Minister’s trip to America, the thaw in NZ/US relations, life as an expat and having two countries to call home.
