AmeriNZ 233 – Distance subdued

The earthquake in Christchurch was a very big deal, but it was kinda weird how I heard about it. Social networks really helped. In some ways, it was all the flipside of an episode I did two years ago.

After that, I have some general life updates, along with a plethora of phone comments—listeners answered the call! My live shows may be close to returning.

AmeriNZ 232 – Surprises

I have a little housekeeping first: An upgrade to my site caused some havoc, killing off links to my podcast files, and that came as a surprise. I’ll fix it, but it’ll take time. Then, it’s on to a couple items in the news, starting with the cost of Kiwi expats. My mini topic today is a talk about some small things that surprised me when I moved to New Zealand. Comments round out the episode, which lets me comment further.

At the end, I play a special promo I made for Nigel’s The Third Colony show this weekend.

Be sure to listen to Nigel LIVE on The Third Colony Saturday, 9-11pm Eastern (in the Americas, 1pm Sunday in New Zealand) on qnation.fm. Go to The Third Colony website for how to listen, or to join the chatroom.

AmeriNZ 231 – Thanks and No Thanks

amerinz_podcast_150x150My first topic today is a blog post of an expat American who’s leaving New Zealand. I see it as a cautionary tale, so I go over my 3 “rules” for being an expat. In other words, I give you my advice about being an expat—including a couple things I shouldn’t have done. Some election news is in the middle. Then, an email provides me a topic: Expats voting in their home country. Should they? Which elections? Comments on the site round out the episode, as usual.

Thanks to everyone who offered support and encouragement! I’m absolutely not quitting—but new things are coming!

AmeriNZ 230 – Crazed Man Posits

amerinz_podcast_150x150Today’s title is derived from a little Internet fad, which I talk about first. Then, they’ll let any riffraff live in New Zealand. An almost American-style change to the NZ income tax has been proposed. American-style climate change deniers are grandstanding. The liquor laws may yet change. The local elections are coming up fast, and important deadlines fall on Friday of this week. Then after comments I share a little before ending this episode.

AmeriNZ 227 – Still Winter

amerinz_podcast_150x150It’s Maori Language Week, but I’ve talked about that twice (see links), so I’m taking this year off. I start today talking about our weekend, which I don’t do all that often. In the news, the government is changing the alcohol limits for those caught drink-driving. I meander through news and history before moving on to comments, where I meander through news and history—um, yeah.

Be sure to listen to Nigel on The Third Colony Saturday, 9-11pm Eastern (in the Americas) on qnation.fm. Go to their website for how to listen, or to join the chatroom.

Today’s closing music is “Crowing” by Glen Phillips.

AmeriNZ 225 – Busy day talk

I am busy, but with ordinary life this time. Still, I take time to talk with you. First up, I talk a bit about Creative Commons licensing, and how that sort of thing is the future. From there, it’s a talk of the massive fee increases that US citizens living in New Zealand have to deal with. I once praised the US embassy in NZ, but it’s not so great after all. Don’t forget Nigel’s show on Saturday (Americas)!

AmeriNZ 224 – Onward

amerinz_podcast_150x150Busy again (some things don’t change). There’s been a lot going on, starting with Pride 48 and work, too. I also tell you about Nigel’s new show. An odd story in the news caught my eye. I have lots of comments that let me talk about other things. I may only have one episode next week, too.

AmeriNZ 222 – Busy Week Ahead

amerinz_podcast_150x150I start out today talking about Pride 48, the 48-hour live podcasting marathon. It begins with a kick-off show at 8pm Eastern on Friday, June 25 in the Americas (9pm Saturday, June 26 in New Zealand) and ends 48 hours later. As host of Pride 48 for 2010, I’ll be on the kick-off show and the wrap-up show. My own live show is 5:30am-7am June 26 Eastern time in the Americas (9:30pm to 11pm New Zealand time). I’ll record that show and post it the following week.

I then give yet another update on a story I talked about before. The annual nude rugby game was a bit of harmless silliness. Naturally, far right christianists were apoplectic over TV news reports. New Zealand wants to turn off its analogue television. A new report finds that illegal downloads in New Zealand haven’t hurt the recording industry, despite its claim they have in order to try and get a hard new copyright law in place. The pace of emigration to Australia has picked up, despite the current government’s promise to make people want to stay in New Zealand. That means that things are actually worse since this government took power. The New Zealand All Whites have done well at the FIFA World Cup. Finally, I comment on the abrupt name change for one of my favourite podcasters.

AmeriNZ 221 – Things you miss

Ep221-Art200I have both New Zealand updates AND a short topic today. Not only that, it’s my second podcast this week! I can’t remember the last time I did that. After NZ news (including an update), it’s on to today’s short topic: There are some unusual things I miss about the US, and today’s show art shows one (thanks for the photo, Lord Byron of Illinois!). I talk about that and a few other random things—not the sort of things that most people think about. Comments let me further comment on an earlier topic.

AmeriNZ 219 – Wintry Wednesday

amerinz_podcast_150x150It’s winter in New Zealand; I don’t care what the calendar says. Today I tell you about our holiday weekend, then it’s on to some things from the news: Will Riff Raff be allowed to live in New Zealand? Will the hooker get to keep the bank’s millions? Will the mail still make through the gloom six days a week? Will pendants succeed in locking-down the English language? Will I think of another question to ask?

Something in the PO Box, a phone comment, a written one and my first Audioboo, all in one episode! Great value for the price you pay! (yes, I’m being silly today).
