I have an unusual topic today: A US article about when not to use debit cards. This lets me compare and contrast some everyday things between the US and New Zealand. But before that, I have been wronged by Big Fatty.

AmeriNZ 203 – Autumn begins

First, I have a special announcement about next week (well, two, actually—the other’s near the end). Then, it’s Autumn now, though technically it doesn’t start for a couple days yet, but the weather is already changing. I have a story from the news, then another that actually related to last week’s topic. And there’s a competition question, of course.

Archerr will be doing a live group show on Pride 48 starting at 8:00pm Eastern North American time on Thursday, March 18 (1:00pm Friday, March 19 New Zealand time). You can also join other listeners in the chatroom, where you can also ask questions or make comments as the show is streamed. I’ll be back hosting the live show the following week.

AmeriNZ 201 – Religion, podcasts and more

All you have to do is write down the question number and the correct answer. My first topic today is updates on me, sort of. After that, it’s on to the main topic: Religion. It starts with a discussion of a fundamentalist church that’s been in the news for over a week. Then, I talk about religion in New Zealand more generally, citing some of the stats about it.

Finally, podcasts: I’m making major changes to the live podcast starting in April, when they’ll will return to the same format as in the first live episode, last September (AmeriNZ 174 – Live Chat Premier). That is, in the first segment I’ll have a chat with someone about political issues affecting GLBT people, and then the second segment will be a group chat on the subject, similar to the way the chats have been. Also, they’ll be every other week—I’ll be alternating with Archerr from Archerr.com, who’ll revive his group shows. And finally, the live shows will have their own name, not technically part of AmeriNZ, but I don’t have a name yet. Have any ideas?

The Pride 48 marathon will return! It will begin on Friday evening, June 25 and run through Sunday evening, June 27 (all times Eastern America). I’m taking on the role of being the “public face” of the Pride 48 event—encouraging podcasters to participate, helping promote the event, those sorts of things. You’ll hear more about that soon.

That lets me talk some about Kiwi customs. I talk a little bit about the news, then a novelty phone message introduces comments. But I start out today giving more details about my anniversary contest.

AmeriNZ 195 – Summer simmer

amerinz_podcast_150x150It’s HOT in Auckland! I was also completely busy last week, partly because of a public holiday. Actually we had two public holidays last week, which leads me to talk a bit about public holidays generally. This year, Waitangi Day touched off discussion on changing the New Zealand flag. I talk a bit about that, and even about flag burning, of all things. New Zealand news updates this episode are about a singer who died, an update to something I talked about last time, and also the Prime Ministers speech to Parliament today.

Before comments, I have some updates about this podcast. A lot is going on!

AmeriNZ 190 – Arthur’s Back

amerinz_podcast_150x150Three weeks: I think this may be the longest I’ve gone without recording a studio podcast (I’m too lazy to check that). I was extremely busy in November, and that even continued into December. Now I have a one more project to complete this week and things will ease up. Today I tell you why the country is called “New Zealand”, and how it has nothing to do with the letter “Z”. I also tell you about “zed” and “zee”. Two NZ news updates today, and I have a few written comments and a whole bucketload of voicemails. Twitter ends up being mentioned in several contexts (speaking of which, I have a new one called AmeriNZPodcast just for show updates.

There may be one or two AmeriNZ recorded podcasts before the end of the year, or early next year, but I’ll definitely be back after January 11. There’ll also be a new 2Political Podcast episode the last week of the year.
