AmeriNZ 202 – From the headlines

amerinz_podcast_150x150Recorded live and presented mostly unedited (be warned): Joining me for today’s Live Chat on Pride48.com were Archerr, Daniel Brewer, Larken and Wes Stone.

In this episode, we talk about some stuff in the news, starting with the Mississippi high school that cancelled its prom rather than allow a lesbian to attend with her female date. We also talk about a crazy poll, the California State Senator who was outed when he was arrested with another man, some “tenther” laws and other serious stuff. But we also talk about some internet and tech stuff—the Apple iPad, the Pride 48 podcasting marathon, Twitter as a customer service tool (really!), and a New Zealander caught up in the a craze. All kinds of stuff this week.

Archerr frequently does group shows like this (and he’ll be doing a group show next week) and you know what? It’s much easier than what I was trying to do. To me, it seemed like it flowed more smoothly and was more fast-paced. What do you think?

The next live AmeriNZ podcast on Pride48.com will be starting at 8:00pm Eastern North American time on Thursday, March 25 (1:00pm Friday, March 26 New Zealand time—new time due to change in US clocks). Join us! You can also join other listeners in the chatroom, where you can ask questions or make comments as the show is streamed.

AmeriNZ 201 – Religion, podcasts and more

amerinz_podcast_150x150It’s the second episode if the AmeriNZ Podcast’s Anniversary Month! Remember, each recorded audio podcast will have at least one question and answer. All you have to do is write down the question number and the correct answer. Once you have five correct questions/answers, send them to me by the end of the month and every correct entry will go in the draw to win a Kiwi Prize Pack including things from New Zealand. You can enter as often as you like, but each entry must have five different correct questions/answers.

My first topic today is updates on me, sort of. After that, it’s on to the main topic: Religion. It starts with a discussion of a fundamentalist church that’s been in the news for over a week. Then, I talk about religion in New Zealand more generally, citing some of the stats about it.

Finally, podcasts: I’m making major changes to the live podcast starting in April, when they’ll will return to the same format as in the first live episode, last September (AmeriNZ 174 – Live Chat Premier). That is, in the first segment I’ll have a chat with someone about political issues affecting GLBT people, and then the second segment will be a group chat on the subject, similar to the way the chats have been. Also, they’ll be every other week—I’ll be alternating with Archerr from Archerr.com, who’ll revive his group shows. And finally, the live shows will have their own name, not technically part of AmeriNZ, but I don’t have a name yet. Have any ideas?

The Pride 48 marathon will return! It will begin on Friday evening, June 25 and run through Sunday evening, June 27 (all times Eastern America). I’m taking on the role of being the “public face” of the Pride 48 event—encouraging podcasters to participate, helping promote the event, those sorts of things. You’ll hear more about that soon.

Join us on for the next live podcast on Pride48.com for a lively, wide-ranging discussion. The next live chat starts at 8:00pm (changed time) Eastern North American time on Thursday, March 11 (2:00pm Friday, March 12 New Zealand time). You can also join other listeners in the chatroom, where you can also ask questions or make comments as the show is streamed.

AmeriNZ 186 – Real or not?

amerinz_podcast_150x150Recorded live and presented mostly unedited, this episode has some sound issues. Joining me for today’s Live Chat on Pride48.com were regular panellist LurryDean, as well as Larken, Lord Byron from Illinois and Brother Cinaedus.

The Internet has changed everything—the way we shop, the way we get information, the way we do politics and even the way we relate to one another. New forms of communication and social interaction have sprung up, bringing new opportunities for friendship and more.

Some sneer at “online relationships”, as they’re sometimes called, even when they turn into something deep and permanent. Yet even cynics would agree they allow us to learn about different people in different places. But does that make them “real”? If there’s someone we get to know only through online chats, Twitter, Facebook, Skype or whatever, and we never meet them in real life, can they ever be considered a “real” friend? Or, is it similar to casual friends and acquaintances we make through work or community groups? Could it be something different and new, something society hasn’t fully adjusted to yet?

After that topic, we talk a bit about religions involvement in GLBT politics: Rge Roman Catholics attempting to blackmail the Washington, DC city council and the Mormons endorsing a GLBT-rights law in Salt Lake City. That’s a wide-ranging discussion that even loops back to the main topic.

From next week, these live chats will be about 45 minutes.

AmeriNZ 185 – Live Chat: What Now?

amerinz_podcast_150x150Recorded live and presented unedited (be warned): Joining me for today’s Live Chat on Pride48.com were regular panellists Steven in Wisconsin and LurryDean, as well as Larken.

After thirty-one defeats in a row, and despite a narrow win in Washington State, radical religious extremists have been emboldened by their victory in Maine and are marching on in their campaign to deny GLBT people ALL civil and human rights, not just the right to marry. How do we fight back—and win? Sure, we have to wage mighty grassroots campaigns, but how do we fight a lie? How do we take on scaremongering? How do we defeat the radical religious extremists without coming across like we think all religion or religious people are our enemies? How do we put an end to the nonsense of people being able to vote on who is and who is not an equal citizen? What do we need to do right now to turn the tide?

Toward the end of today’s episode we talk about all sort of things, some of it related to today’s topic, most of it not. That’s the point of a group show, after all.

Posting of the recorded version of this episode was delayed by my heavy work commitments.

AmeriNZ 183 – Live chat: WHAT Agenda?

amerinz_podcast_150x150Recorded live and presented unedited (be warned): Joining me for today’s Live Chat on Pride48.com were regular panellists Steven in Wisconsin and LurryDean, as well as Brother Cinaedus and Larken. Today we look at the gay “agenda”.

The radical right goes on and on about the “Gay Agenda”. We find that hilarious, because we can’t agree on what we should be trying to accomplish, let alone what our priorities should be. Agenda? It’s not even as strong an action plan as a grocery list is.

What we seek is really a simple objective: To be treated as equal citizens. There are many things needed to get there, like passage of ENDA, for example. Should we prioritise what we want and need to happen, or should we just “go with the flow”? Does it even matter what order things happen in?

This leads into all sorts of related topics: Race, religion, and more—all the sorts of things that people aren’t supposed to talk about (unless they’re Arthur, who talks about little else). We even talk about t-shirts. Daniel Brewer joins us toward the end, after Arthur dares to paraphrase him. Sadly, we lost Brother Cinaedus part way through. Still, it was a lot of fun, and anyone is welcome to join us!

AmeriNZ 179 – Live Chat on Difference

Recorded live and presented unedited (be warned): Joining me for today’s Live Chat on Pride48.com were Steven in Wisconsin, LurryDean and Archerr. We started out by looking at a simple question: Are gay people really different from non-gay people?

It was a wide-ranging discussion from there, talking about a lot of things, including same-sex marriage and the priorities if GLBT activists. And to think, I was still getting over being sick! Last week, some of the recorded stuff was deleted. This week, we chatted well after the recorded portion ended. What that means is that every week there will be some stuff you’ll only hear if you listen live.

AmeriNZ 176 – Live Chat on Healthcare

amerinz_podcast_150x150This episode was delayed due to some technical problems. It’s mostly unedited.

The healthcare reform “debate” in the US has been more like a schoolyard brawl, and most Americans are no more enlightened now than when it began. Yet polls show the vast majority of Americans want healthcare reform along the lines of what President Obama proposed.

Joining me for the live chat were by LurryDean, Larken and Steven in Wisconsin. We being by talking about where things are and where they seem to be headed. Daniel Brewer joins us to talk about the nature of how the insurance industry works, something that shapes the entire reform debate.

We end up talking about a lot of related topics—and a few not so related. I still need a sign-off phrase—email me your suggestions!

It’s possible that there won’t be a group show on Thursday, October 1 Americas/Friday, October 2 in New Zealand & Australia. Watch this site for more details.

Join us on for the group chats on Pride48.com for a wide-ranging discussion. The live chats start at 8pm Eastern North American time on Thursday (1pm Fridays New Zealand time). Check this amerinzpodcast.com for any updates.

AmeriNZ 174 – Live Chat Premier

ep174_site-artThis is the premier episode of weekly chats streamed out live over Pride48.com. There were a few teething problems (such as some sound issues, like in the first few seconds); I’ll get them sorted. Some of those issues are edited out, but this is mostly as it happened. I decided not to split this into two episodes because the group chat carried on from the interview (thanks for the advice, Archerr!). Future episodes will be shorter.

In part one, I talk with Jeffrey Taylor, who had one of the first podcasts I ever listened to, “The Gay Expat”. Since then, he’s moved on to vlogging and other new media opportunities. So we talk about his former podcast, about Vlog Europe and VideoCamp SF.

From there we talk about some of Jeffrey’s political activities: Today he was appointed to the Interim Administrative Group of Restore Equality 2010, a statewide group working for a repeal of California’s anti-gay Proposition 8 in 2010. He talks a bit about what led him to this, and we also talk about the future and opportunities.

We also talk about the upcoming March for Equality, immigration reform and other bits and pieces. Related to all that, new technologies offer some unique opportunities to organise for equality, and we talk about that, too.

In part two, we’re joined by Steven in Wisconsin, LurryDean and Daniel Brewer for a group chat about some of the issues raised in part one, especially the National Equality March, marriage equality, DADT, ENDA, and GLBT equality generally. We talk about the national vs. local strategy, and some of the ways forward. Should we take what we can get or demand everything? It’s a wide-ranging talk about lots of things—too many to list!

Live shows will be every Thursday at 8PM (Eastern time in North America, 12 Noon Friday in New Zealand), and regular weekly episodes will normally be one hour. Future episodes won’t necessarily all be about politics, by the way. And, I’ll figure out how to host a group show…

New Live shows, new format

I’m about to launch a new series of live AmeriNZ Podcasts on Pride48.com, beginning on Friday, September 18 at 12 noon NZ time (Thursday, Sept 17, 8PM Eastern US time). Don’t worry about calculating what that is in your local time—just go to the schedule page on Pride48.com and change the time zone to yours.

These new live shows will be different from the ones I’ve done before. They’ll be more topical—about politics, current events, culture, etc. The crazy shows will be back from time to time, but the weekly show will be a bit more structured. Each show will have a chatroom available so listeners can interact with each other, me and the others on the show. Each show will be about an hour long.

The group shows will be first come, first served or whatever; there’s a limit to how many people can be in a Skype conference, so be in early (you can email me in advance if you want to be sure to be part of the group). In the middle of the week, I hope to post the topics for that week so if it’s something you’re especially interested in you can be sure to be there.

The premier episode will be different: It’ll be two hours long, and starts with a special guest. Then, we’ll all take part in the group show (which should begin about 12:45 or 1pm NZ time, 8:45pm 9pm Eastern US). The following week it’ll be back to an hour.

So stop by for the premier episode and take part in any way you feel comfortable. This show will be whatever we make it together, so let’s have some fun!
