Episode cancelled

I recorded an episode yesterday, but I couldn’t upload it using my FTP software. So, this morning I tried uploading through the host’s website—five times. It wouldn’t upload. So, until I have time to make an international long distance phone call to try to sort it out, I won’t be posting any audio or video files. Damn. I actually managed a second episode this week! Grr.

AmeriNZ 261 – Curtain management

This much-delayed episode was recorded on a Monday! My theory was that if I started on a Monday, I might actually finish an episode before the week is out. Clearly, it worked! I start today talking a bit about all that, including some behind-the-scenes talk about how I make these podcasts.

I’ll no longer be available for someone else’s shows (apart from Nigel’s, of course) on our weekends (Friday and Saturday in the Americas). I’m guarding that time.

Most of this episode is taken up with voicemails and my response to the topics raised. At the end of the episode I talk a bit about upcoming recording this week, including a live show on Pride48.com on Monday at 9pm EDT (Americas, 1pm Tuesday NZ). That show, “State of the Station” is about Pride 48 and that event.

A change of plans…

Each Monday at 9pm (Americas), I host a live show called “State of the Station” on Pride 48. The shows are intended to provide updates and information to people interested in the Pride 48 podcasting event, which this year will be held September 16-19 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. We record those shows for people who can’t listen live (we do them live is so that people can ask questions in the chatroom and, hopefully, get them answered right then).

I’d originally planned to post the first Pride 48 “State of the Station” recorded show here, as part of my podcast. However, since I came up with that, the more permanent option became available, so it’s now available directly from the Pride 48 Posterous page. All future episodes will be posted there, too, and you’re welcome to leave comments.

If you want to subscribe to the feed so you get all the future shows, then subscribe to http://feeds.feedburner.com/Pride48 For example, in iTunes, go to the Advanced menu, choose “Subscribe to podcast…” then in the box that opens, paste the feedburner URL (don’t forget the http colon and slashes) and you’ll be subscribed to all future recorded episodes as they’re released.

Guest on a podcast premiere

This week, I was part of the panel on a new podcast, This Week in Gay. The debut episode was posted yesterday. The other panellists were by Satyr69 from the Satyrsphere Podcast, David of That Blue Jeans Guy Podcast, JayT from JayTOnline, and Matthew from Spanking Bea Arthur. The host, and creator of the podcast, is Anthony from A Shanty No Lemon.

Anthony’s idea was to resurrect the group discussions of a former podcast. He wrote: “Join us as we discuss this week’s news affecting the Gay community. Leave your feedback at www.ThisWeekInGay.com.” I like what Anthony is doing with the podcast, and I think it’ll get even better as it gets going. Personally, I think it takes most podcasts awhile to start to “work”, but maybe that was just true for me.

Anyway, for a group discussion on current events, check out This Week in Gay.

An important announcement

I’ll continue doing live shows on Pride 48, despite the end of My Honey Wears Plaid, but the shows will now begin at 8pm Eastern (in the Americas).

This week will be something very different (after a suggestion from Wes Stone of the Live It Up! podcast): I’m hosting a Pride 48 Town Meeting on what we as a podcasting community—podcasters and listeners alike—can do to help prevent suicides among GLBT youth. Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” Project is a great idea, and UKThom is putting together a video made by Pride 48 folks.

But what about those of us who primarily do audio? What can we do as podcasters and—especially—what can we do using Pride 48? We have the ability to reach many people, what’s the best way to use that?

So put on your thinking caps, jot down some ideas, and join us on Pride 48 at 8PM EDT this coming Thursday, October 7, 2010 (Friday, October 8 at 1PM New Zealand time).

AmeriNZ 233 – Distance subdued

The earthquake in Christchurch was a very big deal, but it was kinda weird how I heard about it. Social networks really helped. In some ways, it was all the flipside of an episode I did two years ago.

After that, I have some general life updates, along with a plethora of phone comments—listeners answered the call! My live shows may be close to returning.

Clearing some dust

I’ve now restored the links to all AmeriNZ Podcast episodes for 2010 (and December 2009, too). I’ve also restored the links to all four videos, three of which can be viewed here on the site (for some reason, video 4 won’t play, and I have no idea why—I’m stumped). I also fixed my video player skin, which had an image I made—up until it disappeared.

It turns out all these problems—and more I discovered just this evening—were all caused by upgrades to podPress. I know they call it a “labour of love”, but I’d sure love them a lot more if they didn’t break things when they fixed other things.

Anyway, I’ll keep restoring links. The next update will be when I’ve completed re-linking the podcast episodes from 2009. Please let me know if you discover any broken links to my files (I can’t control external links) fro anything posted in December 2009 or later. Thanks!

Pardon the dust…

Over the weekend I upgraded WordPress on this site and there was a small but critical change I didn’t know about: It changed the way it handled file path names, and that meant that all my audio and video files were no longer available.

As of this posting, I’ve restored access to all files going back to the Pride 48 live episode posted the end of June, so all episodes from then on (July and August) are again available. I’ll get the rest sorted out, too, but it’ll take time because I have to fix it one episode at a time.

What happened is that before the upgrade there was a drop-down menu for my audio files so I could simply select them. After the upgrade, that drop-down menu was gone and WordPress couldn’t find the files anymore.

So, I have to go in and add the complete web address for each file—easy enough to do, but it takes time. Actually, it’s not that easy: For older episodes I’ll have to check on the server to find out what the filename actually is, and that’ll take a little while longer.

2Political didn’t have this problem when I upgraded it because it never had the drop-down menu: I always had to enter the location of the files.

Oh, and one other thing: I realised I REALLY need to make a custom “404” page—the standard one is ugly.

AmeriNZ 212 – Tough go shopping

amerinz_podcast_150x150First up today I have an important announcement. Then, it’s all about me—as it should be, of course. I tell you about my Adventure Shopping, and then correct what may have been a grievous error (or not). I also tell you how old Bella is, and have some fun at the expense of other podcasters.

Note: I will not be doing a live show this week.

Archerr will do a live group show on Pride 48 starting at 8:00pm Eastern North American time on Thursday, April 29 (Noon Friday, April 30 New Zealand time). You can join other listeners in the chatroom, where you can also ask questions or make comments as the show is streamed.
