AmeriNZ 181 – Live chat on men and intimacy

amerinz_podcast_150x150Today’s show starts about 20 minutes into the discussion (I explain that first). Joining me for today’s Live Chat on Pride48.com were Steven in Wisconsin, LurryDean and Lord Byron of Illinois (who suggested today’s topic). We talked first about men and intimacy: Can gay men teach heterosexual men about non-sexual emotional intimacy with other men? Or, is it just a myth that gay men are better able to achieve it? Is the lack of emotional intimacy among men just a part of being male?

It was a wide-ranging discussion on a whole host of related issues. Toward the end, I ask about the Senate having approved the Hate Crimes Act.

These are turning into wide-ranging, round-table discussions—join us on for the next live podcast on Pride48.com. The next live chat starts at 8pm Eastern North American time on Thursday, October 29 (1pm Friday, October 30 New Zealand time). You can also join other listeners in the chatroom, where you can ask questions or make comments as the show is streamed.

AmeriNZ 179 – Live Chat on Difference

Recorded live and presented unedited (be warned): Joining me for today’s Live Chat on Pride48.com were Steven in Wisconsin, LurryDean and Archerr. We started out by looking at a simple question: Are gay people really different from non-gay people?

It was a wide-ranging discussion from there, talking about a lot of things, including same-sex marriage and the priorities if GLBT activists. And to think, I was still getting over being sick! Last week, some of the recorded stuff was deleted. This week, we chatted well after the recorded portion ended. What that means is that every week there will be some stuff you’ll only hear if you listen live.

Join us on for the next live podcast on Pride48.com for a lively, wide-ranging discussion. The next live chat starts at 8pm Eastern North American time on Thursday, October 22 (1pm Friday, October 23 New Zealand time). You can also join other listeners in the chatroom, where you can ask questions or make comments as the show is streamed.

AmeriNZ 178 – Live show gives Big Fatty material

amerinz_podcast_150x150Even after skipping last week’s live show, I wasn’t sure I’d be able do one this week. I did! LurryDean and Steven in Wisconsin joined me for a general chat. We started out talking about family—the ones we’re born into and the ones we make. Then we talk a little bit about the National Equality March, and even about criticism that President Obama isn’t doing enough for GLBT people. After that, we talk about a number of things, including famous podcasting celebrity, Big Fatty. We give him material for the openings of many episodes of his show.

Clarification: President Bill Clinton appointed James Hormel as ambassador to Luxemburg, but that appointment was blocked by now-dead US Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC), so Clinton appointed Hormel while Congress was in recess. President George W. Bush appointed Michael Guest as ambassador to Romania, but his sexual orientation didn’t become public until after the Senate had confirmed him. Afterward, he was attached by rigthwingers, including some in Romania, and his tenure ended after only two years, though the Bush State Department claimed that had been the plan all along. So: David Huebner stands to be the first openly-gay person nominated as Ambassador and then confirmed by the US Senate. Add it all up, and it would make Huebner, in effect, the first openly-gay US Ambassador, though I realise that to some people that may be a technicality.

The next AmeriNZ Live group show podcast is Thursday, 15 October at 8pm North America time, 1pm Friday, 16 October in New Zealand on Pride48.com (and I be much better organised next week…)

The next 2Political Podcast will be released early next week on 2political.com, where you can subscribe through iTunes or directly to the feed.

AmeriNZ 174 – Live Chat Premier

ep174_site-artThis is the premier episode of weekly chats streamed out live over Pride48.com. There were a few teething problems (such as some sound issues, like in the first few seconds); I’ll get them sorted. Some of those issues are edited out, but this is mostly as it happened. I decided not to split this into two episodes because the group chat carried on from the interview (thanks for the advice, Archerr!). Future episodes will be shorter.

In part one, I talk with Jeffrey Taylor, who had one of the first podcasts I ever listened to, “The Gay Expat”. Since then, he’s moved on to vlogging and other new media opportunities. So we talk about his former podcast, about Vlog Europe and VideoCamp SF.

From there we talk about some of Jeffrey’s political activities: Today he was appointed to the Interim Administrative Group of Restore Equality 2010, a statewide group working for a repeal of California’s anti-gay Proposition 8 in 2010. He talks a bit about what led him to this, and we also talk about the future and opportunities.

We also talk about the upcoming March for Equality, immigration reform and other bits and pieces. Related to all that, new technologies offer some unique opportunities to organise for equality, and we talk about that, too.

In part two, we’re joined by Steven in Wisconsin, LurryDean and Daniel Brewer for a group chat about some of the issues raised in part one, especially the National Equality March, marriage equality, DADT, ENDA, and GLBT equality generally. We talk about the national vs. local strategy, and some of the ways forward. Should we take what we can get or demand everything? It’s a wide-ranging talk about lots of things—too many to list!

Live shows will be every Thursday at 8PM (Eastern time in North America, 12 Noon Friday in New Zealand), and regular weekly episodes will normally be one hour. Future episodes won’t necessarily all be about politics, by the way. And, I’ll figure out how to host a group show…

AmeriNZ 163 – Pride 48 Sunday

pride48_125x125Nigel and I did ANOTHER live show on Pride 48 Sunday night, and this is the recording of that show. It’s a different kind of podcast—again—and we had a lot of fun. LurryDean joins us, too.

Plans are to repeat this not just next year, but also in 6 months or so. In the meantime, several podcasters are going to continue doing live shows, and this podcast may be one of them. I’ll let you know in advance if that happens.

AmeriNZ 159 – Recovering

amerinz_podcast_150x150I’m podcasting today despite my cold; I’m a giver. Today, I start by talking about swine flu, which is now a very big deal in Australia. Then, I update the story about the alleged “HIV predator”. That lets me mention a couple things about legal stuff in New Zealand. Finally, New Zealand has been ranked the most peaceful nation in the world. A comment, and I’m done.

AmeriNZ 158 – Super Friday

amerinz_podcast_150x150This is my last podcast for May, and we’re about to have a holiday weekend—(Every) Queen’s Birthday. Today I start by telling you about some NZ news, including the arrest of an alleged “HIV predator”. The Prop 8 decision has had some reaction in this part of the world, where the debate is different. Today I also share my feeling on how we move forward.

AmeriNZ 120 – Politicast after the debates

Jason and I are back, after the final (!) presidential debate. We talk about that, and also about the two “elephants in the room”: Palin’s religion and Obama’s race. The first ought to be an issue, especially for GLBT voters—and rational voters of all kinds—and the other isn’t a factor for opinion polls (we tell you why). Aside from that, it’s a wide-ranging discussion of the US election, with more to come.
